When Life Becomes Temporarily Overwhelming
Tuesday, July 12th, 2011NOTABLE QUOTABLES
“There is a fine line between fishing and just standing
on the shore like an idiot.”
—Steven Wright
Steven Wright is one of my favorite comedians because he is a master of the absurd. His humor reminds me of how truly absurd life is, especially if I let the piddly daily annoyances creep over me. When my day becomes twisted with absurdity I look for something like a Steven Wright quote to break the grip of immobilizing seriousness.
In the meantime, life will always be absurd. You can curse, cry or laugh. Take your pick.
How do you deal with those days that make you feel as if you “shoulda stood in bed”?

Restlessness is a barometer I use…
Thursday, June 23rd, 2011NOTABLE QUOTABLE
“Restlessness is a barometer that reveals my spiritual and emotional health today.” –Each Day a New Beginning
Sometimes I call that feeling my “gnawing inner discontent.” Sometimes I call it names I cannot share with you here. Whatever I call it, however, some days it rises up and overtakes me. Today, and only today, this day, now, this moment, I remind myself to breathe deeply and surrender the results to the Universe as I understand the Universe. Today, I am not able to do more.
If this is a feeling that you can relate to, how do you handle it when it hits?

Word From the Wise: New Broom, Sweep Clean
Friday, June 10th, 2011“Another flaw in the human character is that everbody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance.”
–Kurt Vonnegut (1922 – 2007)
When I was a young girl my mother would growl “new broom, sweep clean” when I’d start yet another project with great gusto, only to abandon it when the first wave of motivation was gone. I would cringe. It hurt my feelings when she said it but as I grew older, I decided that maybe she had a point. It’s so easy to ride on the wave of creativity only to drop the ball when obstacles present themselves.
Even today, working with omnipresent technology, I frequently find myself throwing in the towel when my somewhat skimpy technical skills prevent me from finishing a project. Then I hear that annoying epithet echoing in my head. I might cringe but it pushes to me finish the project up no matter how much drudgery is involved.
“Thanks, Mom. I guess I needed that.” I might think silently, eyes upwards. How often do you stop when the going gets tough? How does it impact your daily life? How can you find your way through the bumps and potholes to completion today?

don’t know how to laugh either.”
–Golda Meir
Both laughter and tears cleanse us. They bring closure to any moment that moves us. They are the key to letting go and moving on. They are the proof that we are living our lives fully. They are the proof that we have risked a moment of Truth and come out the other side intact.
How will you walk through your own moments of Truth today, bravely and with good humor?

A Blogger-ette Returns…
Friday, May 20th, 2011
I’ve gotten a lot of feedback about my blog, as I guess most bloggers do.
In fact, I solicited the input and thoughtfully pondered it.
And then…and then…this blogger-ette froze with indecision mingled with self-doubt (to be expected, of course). Oh well, I’m always a work in progress. I confess…happily.
So I retired to my girl-cave and sucked my thumb for awhile, while I chewed on the information so graciously given. How did I want to implement the suggestions people had made?
In the meantime, I’ve noticed as I’ve come slurking back and looking around, ready to break out, that returning to the internet after a few weeks of being in contemplation… is like GOING BACK TO YOUR OLD NEIGHBORHOOD, when you were like five. The house you were born in. Ya know?
Lordy, lordy, lordy. Where IS everything? Everything has changed. Passed me by it seems. Moved along at its frenetic pace while I sucked my thumb. Jeez Louise! Now what? Google has become Facebook and Facebook has become Uber Google and Yahoo is picking up some speed and Bing, and the Cloud. I just don’t know. I’m kind of in shock.
So, I return to you, beloved Readers. As Stranger in a Strange Land. Will my brand, new, spanking, spicey, improved blog fit? I’m not sure but…I guess I’ll just get on-board, and follow my nose, as is my lifelong habit and strategy of moving through life.
Hmmm…maybe a new hairstyle??? New shoes???
But, ya know, is it as it has always been…wherever I go, there I am, in living color.
But this Blogger-ette is Back. Let’s see. How do I always do it? Oh yes, I remember, both feet first, and everybody into the pool. It’s P-ah-ah-ah-ty time. This girl is back.
I hope y’all missed me. I missed you. xoxox. (…to be continued…)
Here’s to your success always…

Suggestions for Building Self-Confidence
Sunday, April 3rd, 2011Each and every day I awaken knowing that today really is the first day of the rest of my life. I connect easily with my own inner power.
When I connect to my inner power, obstacles and challenges seem to melt away before me.
My partnership with my powerful inner self creates abundance and serenity in all that life brings me today.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE: The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good. Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom.

What to Do When You’re Stuck (solving problems)

A discovery is said to be an accident meeting a prepared mind.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU’RE STUCK?
What do I mean when I say you’re “stuck?” What I mean is that when you have a task, project, or a desire to accomplish something but you just can’t manage to get it done.
When you’re “stuck,” there are a lot of messages coming from inside. You have to learn to interpret these messages. Maybe you’re having headaches, stomachaches, even getting sick. Maybe you’re eating, drinking, spending, wasting time on game sites (or ???). You’re frustrated and confused and you’re not even sure why. Your life may feel temporarily overwhelming and immovable. You may have nagging negative thoughts and feelings but you can’t shake them. You may feel as if you can’t take any action at all.
Sound familiar? That’s what I call being “stuck.” The good news is that once you figure out where you’re “stuck” the solution is almost always close behind. I promise. Even financial problems. Even difficult relationship problems. Even miserable work situations.
Here are six easy steps towards the breaking-through process and moving ahead to success. The first step is really easy.
1. Stop. Breathe. Do nothing. Be still.
2. Step back from the problem mentally. See if you can find a position of objectivity. What would it look like if it were someone else’s problem
3. Close your eyes and let your mind drift backwards to the last time that things were moving ahead.
4. See if you can identify the very next thing that happened. Look for the place where all activity stopped. That’s how you locate it.
5. Next you want to identify the action you can’t take. And you want to figure out why you can’t take that action.
6. Stare right into the abyss of your discomfort.
a. Scan your body for tension. Scan your mind for discomfort. Scan back to when you first noticed this feeling. It helps if you can imagine that you’re outside yourself looking in. Do your best to get some distance and objectivity.
b. Notice the flow of your actions. When did they come to a screeching halt? Let your mind wander backwards to notice what it is that you keep avoiding and procrastinating. When did you start turning back to your favorite distractions: eating, drinking, spending, wasting time on game sites (or ???).
c. What are the scolding thoughts that you mutter to yourself about yourself? You know, that voice in the back of your mind that sounds suspiciously like your mother or father.
d. What is that thought that gives you headaches? Stomachaches? Despair? Panic attacks? Makes you dizzy? Frustrated? Confused?
If you can stand still long enough without allowing yourself to indulge in distractions, you’ll see it. There is one task that you either fear doing or hate doing. Which task do you manage to procrastinate, no matter what?
By the way, when we hate doing something, it’s unusally not the task we hate so much. That’s why it can be hard to figure out. Often what we really fear is discomfort that we expect to experience when we actually DO the task. It might be tedious, boring or challenging. The take-away point is that we’re usually fearing the discomfort rather than the task.
Once you figure out what that task is, you’ll know that you’re almost home free. Stop again. Breathe again. Stare right into the heart of it. The answer will become clear. You’ll “get it” and you’ll know what to do. Once you’ve isolated it, by the way, most of the anxiety, confusion, and resistance melts away.
Buddhist philosophy suggests that pain comes from attachment. Resistance is usually caused by feeling attached to some outcome that you believe will severely impact your life if you fail to reach that particular outcome successfully.
You can get past that by remembering that nothing REALLY matters in the end. When you really get the concept of “Detaching from the Outcome,” you’ll be free…entirely free. You won’t fear being a loser. You won’t fear being a failure. You won’t fear being disappointed. You won’t fear anything. Because somewhere in your heart you’ll know that life goes on. You won’t die. You won’t die from boredom, stress or even fear. Life does go on. No matter what. And when you really know that deeply, you’ll be free to move forward and succeed.
Try it. If you need help with this, call or email. Please tell me of your own thoughts, experiences and questions about feeling stuck or detachment from the outcome.
