The Romans celebrated love and fertility from February 13-15. Men sacrificed goats and dogs and beat women with their hides. These Roman Romeos were naked and drunk too.
Women were chosen through a lottery system. When a number matched a man and woman, they had sex throughout the event. If a compatibility match was made, it extended beyond the festival.
You can only imagine many babies were conceived during that time.
How the name Valentine became associated
Emperor Claudius II executed two men on February 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Both of their names? Valentine. Because of this, the Catholic Church honored their martyrdom.
Shakespeare and Chaucer took history and spun it into a more romantic time. V day became a popular and romantic day in Europe. Paper cards were part of the celebration.
When the tradition came to the New World, Hallmark mass-produced cards. This relieved everyone of the burden of having to hand make cards. Valentine’s Day has become a $20 million event.
Maybe Single’s Awareness Day is looking better.
